If this is the case, it is most often a due to the ribbon shaft being worn or damaged. The ribbon shaft is the spindle or drive gear that fits into the ribbon winder hole of the Star SP700 ribbon cartridge when installed. It is the primary part responsible for advancing the printer ribbon. The ribbon shaft is the most common part that requires replacement, when the the ribbon stops turning.

Replacement of the ribbon shaft requires the following tools:
- Philips screw driver
- Small flat head screw driver
- Needle nose pliers
